Malaysia’s first certified Halal airline, Rayani Air, took its inaugural flight on 20 December 2015. It is one of the few Shariah compliant airlines in the world, including Iran Air, Royal Brunei Airlines, Saudi Arabia Airlines. No pork or alcohol is served on board, and flights begin with a prayer recitation. Muslim flight attendants are expected to observe hijab, and passengers are expected to dress modestly.

So far, the Rayani Air fleet consists of two Boeing 737-400s, each can hold up to 188 passengers. There are plans to expand the fleet by May 2016. According to Managing Director, Jafar Zamhari, international flights, as well as direct flights to Mecca for Hajj and Umrah, are in the future.

Airline founders, Ravi Alagendrran and Karthiyani Govindan, started the company with an aim to cater to the large number of Muslim flyers travelling to and from Southeast Asia. The airline’s vision, according to its founders, is to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for Muslim flyers.

The airline currently employs 350 staff, including eight pilots and 50 cabin crew. It is an international Full Service Carrier that is currently flying between six destinations throughout Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Langkawi International Airport.
